Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

Welcome & Overview

At Limes Farm Infant School and Nursery, Relationships Education (RSE) is an essential part of our Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education curriculum. In the infant years, our focus is firmly on building the foundations for healthy, happy relationships, self-awareness, and emotional well-being. We teach age-appropriate lessons that help children learn about making friends, treating others with kindness and respect, recognising and managing their emotions, understanding personal boundaries, and staying safe both offline and online. Delivered in a sensitive, supportive, and inclusive classroom environment, our curriculum ensures every child feels valued, understands how to seek help if they ever feel unsafe, and develops the social and emotional skills needed to thrive as they grow.

How We Teach RSE: The Jigsaw Scheme

To deliver our RSE and PSHE curriculum, we use Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE. Jigsaw provides a structured, progressive scheme that revisits core themes each year in an age-appropriate way across Reception, Year 1, and Year 2:

  • Being Me in My World: Understanding our place in the class, school, and wider community; setting ground rules; and learning about rights, responsibilities, and working together.

  • Celebrating Difference: Embracing diversity, understanding that everyone is unique, recognising anti-bullying strategies, and learning how to make and keep positive friendships.

  • Dreams and Goals: Building resilience, setting personal goals, overcoming challenges, and learning how to work cooperatively in team tasks.

  • Healthy Me: Exploring healthy choices—including physical activity, healthy eating, personal hygiene, emotional health, and simple safety rules (including medicine and online safety).

  • Relationships: Understanding families and the people who care for us, building healthy friendships, learning about respectful relationships, personal boundaries, and knowing how to seek help if something feels wrong.

  • Changing Me: Understanding growth, coping with change, identifying body parts in an age-appropriate way, and preparing for the transition to the next school year with confidence.

Understanding Your Statutory Rights as Parents & Carers

We believe in working in close partnership with our families, and we ensure complete transparency regarding our Relationships Education curriculum. Under Department for Education (DfE) guidance, Relationships Education and Health Education are statutory requirements for all primary and infant schools in England, meaning all pupils participate in these foundational, age-appropriate safety and well-being lessons.

Because our curriculum at Limes Farm Infant School and Nursery focuses strictly on relationships, friendships, emotional health, personal boundaries, and staying safe—and does not include non-statutory sex education—there is no right to withdraw children from these statutory Relationships Education lessons. We welcome open dialogue with parents and carers at all times; our full RSE policy and teaching resources are readily available on our website, and we are always happy to discuss our curriculum with you.

 Additional Information:

Under the Children and Social Work Act 2017 the government committed to making relationships education (primary)and relationships and sex education (secondary) statutory in all schools, including LA maintained schools, academies, free schools and independent schools. All primary schools are required to have relationships education in place and a relationships and sex education policy.

Education about ‘relationships’ is covered through many aspects of the primary PSHE curriculum. We have ensured that our  PSHE education programme  includes all elements of the new statutory guidance for relationships education. In order to safeguard pupils effectively we have provided a comprehensive programme of relationships and sex education as an integral part of our PSHE provision.
