Phonics Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised

What is Phonics?

Phonics is a way of teaching children how to read and write. It helps children hear, identify and use different sounds that distinguish one word from another in the English language.

Written language can be compared to a code, so knowing the sounds of individual letters and how those letters sound when they’re combined will help children decode words as they read.

Understanding phonics will also help children know which letters to use when they are writing words.

How can I support my child at home?

The resources on this page will help you support your child with saying their sounds and writing their letters. There are also some useful videos so you can see how they are taught at school and feel confident about supporting their reading at home. Find our full Reception and Year 1 teaching programme overview here to see what your child will learn and when.

Once the children have learnt Phonic sounds we must teach them how to blend and segment these in order to spell and read words. Take a look at the following video to see how this is done.

Some words that the chidren learn cannot be decoded by using Phonics. We call these tricky words.

As the children progress through the Phonics programme they learn that some letters can make more than one sound. Please see the following video about how these sounds are taught in Year 1.
